Check with your home state's DMV. I would think you would pay the sales tax to the state in which you bought the car or and if your home state had a higher sales tax, you would pay them the difference.

Thanks for the posts. I really appreciate it. I will check with my state's DMV if I choose to purchase this car in FL.

I just heard a similar story from a dealer in FL - that I would have to pay their sales tax and they would register the car for me in my home state because they have reciprocity. My two concerns were that my home state sales tax would be about half that of FL and how could I be sure that I wouldn't end up having to pay twice. I spoke to a gentleman in the Florida State Revenue office who handles the "education" for registered dealers. First of all, he made it very clear that the dealers SHOULD know better so are they ignorant or dishonest? Who knows, but he said the dealer can download an affidavit at their website www.myflorida.com/dor stating that you are going to register the vehicle in your home state within the next 45 days and you would not be responsible for any sales tax in the state of FL. Obviously you would still need to deal with whatever fees your home state charges at the time of registration, but at least you can be sure you haven't overpaid. Good luck!

Default buying a car in Florida from california

I am a California car dealer.
IF you buy a car anywhere and drive it off, you need to pay the taxes where you bought it and took possession.
IF you buy a car from one state and have it delivered and take possession in another state, you do not pay tax in the state you bought the car. ONLY in the state the car is delivered and registered in.

This is a federal law not a state law.
