I have a nice home here in Spring Hill and a decent sized property but my backyard is being over run with gophers and their mounds are all over the yard. I have tried so many ways to get rid of them all to no avail. Just yesterday as I was leveling the mounds I noticed on the other side of the yard a new one forming and upon inspecting it I saw the gopher through the tunnel opening digging the dirt up. I had the shovel in my hand and felt lick whacking it but just couldn't bring myself to outright hurt the little beast. Has any other members here encountered this problem and is there any remedy to get rid of them. Besides this problem I enjoy living in Spring Hill.

Are you sure they are gophers and not moles?

Try moth balls down each hole and cover it back over.

Another thing is to use a hose end sprayer and spray castor oil over the yard.

Are you sure you don't mean Gopher Tortoises are protected?
As far as I know gophers are not protected but the moth balls just make the moles and gophers move on, it does no harm to them.

To Mike, I am quite certain they are gophers especially after seeing it peeking its head out of the tunnel. In fact while I was leveling the mounds I did put in moth balls but most mounds didn't have a clear tunnel so I stuck the moth balls where the mounds were. I have also tried the gopher repellent spray that is sold at Home Depot and Lowes which contains castor oil. It didn't seem to help much or do you mean use just plain castor oil? And if used pure much of it would be needed and would it be harmful to the lawn and shrubs?

Yes, just plain castor oil and it should not bother the lawn or shrubs.

It could take a few applications.

Default We do!

We do have gophers in Florida. Here is a link to UF's IFAS bulletin about them.
