Sorry but some states in the northeast are At Will States like NJ. Meaning since and employee can just walk out a job, the employer has the right to just fire you for no real reason except federally accepted discriminitory reasons. like TriMT7 said, unless they have a company policy that exceeds the states standards for being fired, like say they have to give you a warning first, then that can be a reason to argue in court. This is because even though you are not a contract employee, the Handbook the employer provides is like a contract, so basically they have to follow their own policies.

Unemployment compensation is the only way to usually be made whole again imo. I mean if you dont have any serious bills just enjoy yourself a little at your employer's and Florida's expense. I hear there are some nice beaches there

What kind of mistake did you make? In many places a mistake in inventory can be construed as stealing.

From what I've heard, that's pretty much how the UAW used to hand out new jobs in Michigan (either to friends or family).

I was thinking the same thing. Even if it's an innocent mistake, could be just cause for the employer and might explain why it was handled in this manner.

Most people cite the UAW as a reason for their hate of unions, I was in the UFCW for many years and it was a great union for a long time, stood up for workers, workers rights, pay, ect, ect.. Obviously we weren't making $20/hr. but it was still a great union.

Not all unions are bad, Not having a union is bad for workers. It gives employers the right to pay low wages, force you to work in unsafe conditions, and/or fire you for no good reason.

Unfortunately, the UAW went beyond that. For years, they had a "Job Bank" program that allowed them to sit around for months getting 95% pay if the auto companies didn't need them. Some of them got to retire at 48 with full bennies for LIFE (i.e. they could end up spending as much time retired as they did working, all on the company's dime). They refused to make concessions as their employers lost more and more $$$ this past decade until it was too late and they declared bankruptcy.

On the public side, state unions in NY and NJ have pretty guaranteed themselves 3-4% COLAs every year, even during one of the worst recessions like this, when people in the private sector are getting laid off and manufacturing is shutting down in upstate NY. It's sad because at one point, Rochester, Syracuse and Buffalo all had thriving manufacturing operations.

Bottom line, both on the public and private side, unions have become far more greedy than what they originally set out to do. They are bankrupting our companies and our states by not making common-sense concessions for the greater good. I'm sorry but when the taxpayers paying your salary are losing their jobs, you can afford to give up your 3% raise for the year.

The UAW got a wake-up call when GM went bankrupt. Who is going to give the public unions a wake-up call? Do CA and NY need to go bankrupt for that to happen?
