Just read the Red Tape Chronicles (redtape.msnbc.com) regarding the problems with a number of states not being able to refund the "state" income tax refunds. Poor money management. I believe California was one of the states.

One more thing to be happy about living in Florida!!! No State Tax!(yet).

If it were not for the foreclosure fiasco and growing unemployment now engulfing much of Florida, I would consider this as positive. The state tax refunds being delayed by these states are the results of adverse economic conditions affecting state government spending. It has to make you wonder what Florida will do since there is no money to refund??

That's why we've always tried to set up withholding so that we had to write a check for less than $100 for any income tax situation. I think we're going to owe $45 to the feds this year, which I see as just about perfect.

Compared to many other places in the country, Pittsburgh is really not doing as badly. Unemployment is still hovering around 6%, and although there are some home foreclosures going on, even those are not extraordinary in number. Where Pittsburgh has not done as well, however, is where they spent significant taxpayer monies to retain fledgling businesses that ended up leaving anyway (US Airways comes to mind). People have lost their jobs during this recession, but there are still some "Help Wanted" signs posted ( usually at many food service positions). Pittsburgh has somewhat reinvented itself since most of the steel industry left with the medical proclivities and the many universities. The cost of living is certainly very reasonable.
