I worked for Publix a blue moon ago, I remember them paying minnimum wage and I recall promotions were seldom if at all. I've never heard of Wegmans.

At any rate, Publix is probably not even half the size that Kroger is. Publix operates 1,001 stores in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina.

Kroger operates 2,477 grocery stores and 700 gas stations under the following names and following states...
  • Baker's (Nebraska)
  • Cala Foods and Bell Markets (California)
  • City Market (Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming)
  • Dillons (Kansas, Missouri)
  • Food 4 Less and Foods Co. (Los Angeles, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Chicago, Illinois)
    • including hispanic format and Food 4 Less Carniceria
  • Fred Meyer (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington)
    • Fred Meyer Marketplace (Alaska, Oregon, Washington)
    • Fred Meyer Northwest Best (Oregon, Washington)
  • Fred Meyer Jewelers
    • Littman Jewelers
    • Barclay Jewelers
    • Fox's Jewelers
  • Fry's Food and Drug (Arizona)
    • Fry's Marketplace (Arizona)
    • Fry's Mercado (Arizona)
    • Fry's Signatures (Arizona)
  • Gerbes (Missouri)
  • Hilander (Illinois)
  • JayC Food Stores (Indiana)
  • King Soopers (Colorado, Wyoming)
  • Kroger Food and Drug (Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, Alabama, Arkansas)
    • Kroger Marketplace (Ohio, Kentucky)
    • Kroger Signature Stores (Texas)
    • Fresh Fare by Kroger (Ohio, Michigan)
  • Kwik Shop (Kansas, Nebraska)
  • Loaf 'N Jug (Colorado, Nebraska)
  • Owen's Market (Indiana)
  • Pay Less Food Markets (Indiana)
  • Quality Food Centers (Oregon, Washington)
    • QFC Fresh Fare
  • Quik Stop (California, Nevada)
  • Ralphs (California)
    • Ralphs Marketplace
    • Ralphs Fresh Fare

I can't comment on other stores but I know first hand that Kroger takes care of its employees and yes-sir, It IS union.

Nope. I shop at Kroger and if I need other items, I go to the mall or K-Mart or Target.

Which means what?

Like I said, the Publix and Wegman's make the Best Places To Work List every year. Wegman's was #1 in the COUNTRY--not of grocery stores but of ALL employers a few years back. All without being unionized. And Publix pays higher than mimimum wage, even for 16 year old stock clerks.

Wegmans Celebrates #5 Ranking on FORTUNE '100 Best Companies to Work For' List *| Wegmans

As far as starting pay, my son started as a clerk with no experience at Publix making $.50/hour over minimum wage. That went up steadily over the three years he was there.

Nevermind.. I found it.. Nice.. When asked what makes it so great it says It is a family owned business, Employees can buy gift cards at a 10% discount IF it's over $250 and they plan to have Free Yoga classes at 100 stores !

THAT makes for one helluva workplace...

They don't give 100% healthcare but they give a membership to the gym and have an on-site fitness center ( Is this place a gym or a grocery store ? )

100 Best Companies to Work For 2009: Wegmans Food Markets - from FORTUNE

Avg. Salary is $28k, I made over $30k to start at Kroger and that doesn't include the two months worth of overtime during the holidays..

It only makes sense why this Wegmans place is popular for employees with their free fitness centers and free yoga.

Average salary also takes into account the part-timers. My SIL works at Wegman's and makes $45K, and when she had a personal health crisis, they bent over backwards to accomodate her--she didn't need a union rep to fight for anything for her.

A union rep would not be needed anywhere if businesses were more like Wegman's.... a real rarity in today's economy.

Read again.

"During an 8-week period last summer and a six-week period at holiday time, employees were able to buy groceries up to $250 each week at a 10% discount, resulting in a maximum savings of $350 for each employee who participated."
