Advice I have is do not buy a car within 6 months of moving to Florida. Even if you paid sales tax in your state, Florida will want to charge you again. A way to bypass this is to rent and keep your address and registration and insurance from another state for 6 months. You can be a snowbird, or just be here for the summer or say you plan on moving back or live in both states if you have a relative whose address you can use in the other state.

You are so mistaken.

You only pay the initial registration charge the first year you bring a car in or purchase one. After that I think tags are pretty cheap in Florida.

From the DMV: You will pay higher fees when you register your car than when you renew your registration, including an initial registration fee and an issuing fee.

Initial registration: $225.
License plate issuing fee: $28.
License plate transfer fee: $7.35.
Vehicle taxes (payable when you register AND renew tags):
Cars:
Up to 2499 lbs.: $27.60.
2500 to 3499 lbs.: $35.60.
3500 lbs. and above: $45.60.
Trucks:
1999 lbs.: $27.60.
2000 to 3000 lbs.: $35.60.
3001 to 5000 lbs.: $45.60.
Motorcycles and other vehicles: See the FL registration fee and tax chart.
Service fees: Varies by location.

Yes the costs are nothing like CA, and are not as bad as many other States. Now TN is far less expensive, but the snow and cold of winter is getting to be a problem,

Florida's renewal's are extremely cheap compared to where I'm from. Minnesota has extremely high plate fees, and the renewal fees are super high. Had I stayed in MN last year, my 2 cars would've cost me $700ish total just for tabs. The same 2 cars with custom plates were $140 here. I'd say that's an extremely good deal. Would be even cheaper if we had the standard Florida plates.
