Default I'd say...

Spring Hill and Brooksville with SH an edge. An adorable town with lots of potential.

Someone mentioned Bonita Springs. I don't agree. Just a huge traffic jam.

Sanibel is still nice because it costs huge money to get across the bridge and it will cost you to sneeze there. Great vacation place, though.

For REAL old Florida, I pick Everglades City. No shopping or all the other baloney. Just real Florida.

I'm sure the wretched refuse would not be interested. But if you want to see the way Florida was, then check it out.

We enjoy going to Everglades City. Tiny quaint town with lots of outdoor/boating recreation.

Default looking for information

Hello,

My wife and I are looking at a rental vacation property for next Winter. We've seen a couple of areas that seemed nice (quiet, friendly and safe). To name a few Zephyrhills, Sebring and Lake Placid and the Crystal River area.

Recently on the net, we saw a rental property in St-Cloud (not far from the water and close to downtown I beleive). Can anyone comment on this area (quiet, friendly and safe). My wife loves to take long walks with our 2 small dogs. Would this be appropriate.

Are there other areas that you would recommend.

PS My wife and I play golf and I am an avid bass fisherman. Thanks!!!

Thumbs up Small-Town Florida Gems

I love Micanopy, in Alachua County. It's like step back in time. (It's been used for several movie sets). It's tiny, but has neat, late 1800's buildings in its "business district". There are also many Victorian homes, and the gorgeous Herlong Mansion. Large, moss-draped oak trees shade the streets. And the old cemetery is very scenic!
I also like Madison a lot. It has many lovely old homes and churches, and the business district is quaint and fun to stroll through--a very attractive little town.
Honorable mention goes to Monticello---another historic town with the courthouse in the middle. It's in the pretty "hill country" just east of Tallahassee.
And DeFuniak Springs has a wonderful Victorian district around
its lake--very pretty! (They have delicious fried green tomato sandwiches there!)

Micanopy (I'm in love with this town/area), and the surrounding small towns.

Parts of Ocala can be nice, but pricey.

The Port Charlotte area seems to be pretty nice and undeveloped as well...

Safety Harbor is a very cute, quaint town, too.
