Come on guys, Mississippi over Florida for a family? Missouri will probably (but maybe not) have better schools and generally is safer. Mississippi and Louisiana are almost guaranteed to be worse in everything except for traffic and cost of living. Even the weather will be worse, considering they get all of the extremes of a Florida summer, including hurricanes, but not quite as nice of a winter. I would rank it like this

1. Missorui
2. Florida
3. Louisiana
4. Mississippi
How is the weather worse in MS? Some parts, yes...Coastal MS is a whole different world from the rest of MS and we have the same weather as the panhandle of FL. I never experienced high crime either, but it depends on what city also. There are good & bad points about every state, the key is to find the city in that state that's a good fit. I personally would live in MS over FL. And I am from Detroit, and have lived in FL, IL, VA, AZ, MS, GA, and NC...MS is the only state I miss when I leave and I continue to keep moving back. And I've been there b4 and after Katrina.

There is no perfect place we have been looking. I am from MO and it is a wonderful place to raise a family but we moved to TX 4 yrs ago for business and TX sucks so we looked into moving to FL till my cousin moved there ahead of us and was robed twice FL has gotten really bad and the school are awful. We have looked and looked and now we are moving to Kalamazoo, MI not just for the schools but the whole package it will make a come back and we will be in on the ground floor. I am not sure about the police force but I would think they would move forward too if they are trying to revive the city.

Granted, Michigan's unemployment statistics are at ridiculous levels, so I am not looking to criticize your rationale for moving to areas of greater opportunities. Florida, however, has a million people currently unemployed, and you are seeking a position in the public service sector that offers benefits, no college degree needed, pays well by Florida standards, and offers some job security. I would think that if a position is available in a Florida police department, there would have have to be hundreds/possibly thousands seeking that position.

Your situation is no different than anyone else assuming that the grass is always going to be greener in Florida (with the great winter weather and the beaches). Unfortunately, there is a reason that for the first time in recent Florida history that more people have left the state than have moved to it. The dwindling and fragile job market is driving the relocation. Hopefully, with a whole lot of good luck, you will be able to find one of those scarce career jobs fast, that will enable you to pay for the privilege of having the weather that you desire.

Let me tell you that Texas is terrible for crimes and drugs and to top that illegals. We moved from South Texas to TN. A friend teaches near Houston, says it is awful. The discrimination against whites, since the Mexican population has grown out of control in the bigger cities in Texas.

Georgia is a great place to live, great weather, friendly people, and Atlanta is a big town with opportunity.
