Hi All! Next August 2nd, my fiance and I will be going on our honeymoon. We really just want a no fuss, beach vacation where we lay around all day and go back to our vacation house at night (I don't want to stay in a hote. I want it to feel homey). We want to go somewhere where there are things to do if we feel like going out but we don't want to go somewhere where we'll feel bad if we don't go do the touristy stuff.
My first question is, when is hurrican season around the Florida Keys? Is this the worst time for us to go or is it later in August?
Secondly, I'm looking at Islamorada. It seems to be the most calm and serene but still has things to do here and there -wine tastings, movies, shopping, etc. What key would you recommend and what kind of activities are there?
Thank you everyone!!

Hurricane season is June through november. The peak is late mid August through September.

Hurricanes and tropical storms are definitely a concern at that time of year. There might not be a storm, or there might be several. Make sure you have a back-up plan.

Both would be great for a honeymoon. You might have better luck finding a house to rent, or B&B, and many more things to do, in Key West.
Hurricane season is June 1 - November 1, I think. Based on my completely unprofessional opinion having been through who knows how many hurricanes in this state, you are probably better off in June. The bad ones always seem to come late in the season - October even.
I went to Cancun for mine (NOT during Spring Break!) and it was affordable and fantastic. Key West is great but it just doesn't compare to exploring Mayan ruins in the jungle...

The Florida Keys has some of the worst beaches, it's more known for snorkeling, scuba diving, boating...the beaches suck and hotels are more expensive than New York City. A vacation house will cost you huge bucks! There are a lot better options and cheaper. Are you ruling out the Caribbean and Hawaii? I go to the Keys quite often since I live in South Florida, it's fun, but definitely not what you're looking for.

Good point, NOBODY goes to the Keys for the beaches...
If it's nice beaches they want, they should be looking on the west coast of Florida and the Panhandle.

Thanks guys! I'm leaning more towards Tybee Beach or St. Simons Island GA. Also looking into South Carolina, other places in Florida, and MAYBE the quieter parts of North Carolina. We just want to make sure there are enough restaurants, shops, and things to do as well as a nice beach if we decide we just want to lay around. We did rule out Hawaii and pretty much anything on the west coast because of plane ticket costs. I'll look into the Caribbean and Cancun. Places like that too. We have a year but obviously we need to get these places locked in if we're going. Any other help is appreciated!

Check out Destin, FL. and the surrounding area.
You can have all the shopping you could want (Destin) or if you want a more relaxed "Old Florida" beach shack experience, check out Grayton Beach (a little more isolated, but just up the road from Destin) for a more romantic atmosphere...

I agree with the other statement about the Keys. Forget the beaches there.
What about a resort in Puerto Rico? It's pretty cheap to fly there from many parts of the US.

What about Big Pine Key? Aren't there timeshares there or something? Key Deer(the size of small dogs) will come up to you to investigate you. They're quite tame -- and cute!
