You might find this interesting. When I signed all the papers to work for the school district, I had to swear allegiance to the Consitution of the United States AND the State of Florida. Like I even KNOW what the constitution of Florida states? I stood up and told them that. I also said I would swear to the US, but not Florida. When I said this, two others there said they agreed with me. I told HR I would only sign that under duress, meaning I would not have a job if I didn't. It was noted on the form that I didn't agree to the latter. It was also noted on the other two people's forms also.
Should you have taken a job in good conscience that arises under the laws of Florida and is funded by the tax payers of Florida?

It's like a federal government worker refusing to pledge allegience to the Constitution or flag because they "don't kow what it says."

Maybe you shouldn't work in government funded positions if you don't know what that government stands for or is all about.

I didn't want to swear allegiance to the state of Florida at all. Those other two people said they hold no allegiance to any one particular state. As they said, we could leave the state tomorrow. Are we supposed to learn the constituions of every single state in the country? Me, personally, I am not staying here anyway. Why would I have any allegiance to place I am leaving?

You don't think that thought process is just a tad bit irrational?

If you are working for the State, and expect to get a pension from the State, yes - you should have some sort of allegiance to the taxpayers of Florida that pay your salary. They don't simply "owe" you.

I now know I am not going to stay here another 4 years to get one. I doubt if I will even finish out the school year. My happiness and peace of mind is worth far more than any pension.

Guys, we can continue this debate ad infinitum about who can tolerate heat and humidity, whether Forida is a good or bad place consequently, whether one should owe allegiance or not to a state one hates because of heat/humidity and other varied reasons, whether freezing temps are better than sticky, suffocating temps, and the list can go on!

When the smoke clears and the dust settles , it's all about each individual's mental, emotional, psychological, physical tolerance - and I daresay that sometimes, as in pychosomatic, the mental attitude can play a great deal in determing to some extent each individual's body tolerance for particular weather conditions.

If, for example, one dislikes Florida for a variety of reasons, then even a change in temps to what one considers ideal will not alter one's distaste for the state. On the other hand, if a person loves Florida for several aspects of life there, then that person's mental predisposition can make excessive heat and humidity more tolerable - not necessarily lovable, but tolerable.

It'a all about each of us. No amount of venting for or against Florida or its heat/humidity on these forums can determine for any particular person whether it's worth the vacation trip or the trip for a lifetme in Florida.

We can all give only our own personal sentiments...but to the would-be Floridian I say, go on down in the summer months as well as the winter months, spend enough time, make a thorough evaluation of your specific life events, goals, dreams , finances...then reach your own conclusion regarding whether you will find the heat and humidity unbearable, enjoyable or just tolerable..

Best in whaever you do!

I knew that 34 years when I missed my parents living here. Now, I miss my kids and they miss me.

Perhaps some people, putting aside weather, can live with that, but me and my family can't. That alone would make moving a top priority.

Although this move will not increase our longevity, it will make the years ahead a lot more pleasant. I know Florida isn't for everyone, but for some of us it is truly a blessing.
And it will be one for us.

Not only is winter physically uncomfortable, but we've hated it for years. Once we move, it will only be an unpleasant memory.
