Tallahassee's best side if the East Side. The two family oriented areas are NE (Killearn area) and SE (Southwood).

I'd stay away from Orlando, and especially Kissimmee.

Try Pembroke Pines, west Boynton Beach, or another suburb in South Florida then. "Diverse" in Central/North FL generally equates to "high crime".

While it is true that a hurricane could hit anywhere, so could lightening.

One of the main hurricane paths is across the Atlantic off the coast of Africa, often devastating Hispaniola and Cuba and other, smaller islands of that section of the Caribbean, around the southern portion of the Florida peninsula, brushing the Keys, entering in the Gulf of Mexico and making landfall in one of the Gulf states, most often the panhandle of Florida and Texas.

For some reason, the northeast Atlantic coast of Florida (St. Augustine, Jacksonville) has not taken a direct hit in living memory.

That does not mean, however, that the east coast of the US is immune to a direct hit, like the ones that slammed Palm Beach County in 2004, or as far north as the Carolinas, or that a zigzagging hurricane or even tropical storm will do major damage, or one that crosses back east through the Gulf of Mexico to mow over a large swathe of the state of Florida (Wilma 2005, wreaking havoc on some 18 counties).

For some reason, possibly sheer luck, the Tampa Bay area has not taken a direct hit in living memory.

Tornadoes are usually offshoots of hurricanes, but sometimes they rip through out of the blue, it seems, apparently mostly in central Florida.

I like electrician and finance/healthcare, you will have reasonable chances of gainful employment. As for diversity, to be sure southeastern Florida comes to mind, but as for the cost of living and family issues, I would join the chorus of those who suggest the Tallahassee - Jacksonville - St. Augustine region, reasonably confident that you could find the diverse community that you seek.

Good luck!
