An updated version of Stephen Foster's "Swanee River" will remain Florida's state song.

Lawmakers had embarked on a quest for a new song -- and even chose a winner of a statewide contest for it -- because "Swanee River" was considered dated and racially insensitive. But some lawmakers had resisted changing the song and said that all that was needed was a few different lyrics. The wording was changed in the mid-1970's to eliminate the offensive lyrics but the words were never officially changed by the Legislature.

Under a compromise, the old song's lyrics will officially change and the winner of the statewide contest, "Florida -- Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky," will become the state's new "anthem."
I'm glad. This is Flroida's state song- it always has been and always will be. Nothing could change it.
