I think for places that far north you might as well look at some better options in GA or SC. For more of an "Old Florida" retirement lifestyle in a more appealing part of the state (for most), I'd recommend a city like Sebring which has milder weather in the winter and decent proximity to bigger cities like Tampa, West Palm Beach or Sarasota (2 hours or less) for advanced medical care, airports and extended shopping. The Citrus County area west of Ocala (Inverness, Crystal River and Dunnellon area) could also be a good option too.

Good suggestion, and I would add cities like Winter Haven to that list. Convenient location, but has that feeling that "time forgot", but in a good way. I really like that little town.

I like Riomar. Slightly more upscale "Old Florida."

Riomar? The neighborhood in Vero Beach? If that is what you mean - maybe you don't - then I don't agree.

Yes, in Vero. The CC and some of the houses date back to the 1920's. I'd consider that Old Florida. At least in this county anyway.

Hmm. Vero Beach has some older, historic homes but I thought Riomar was newer ones. I must be confused. Sorry!

You're not confused, there are some brand new homes in Riomar.

Fernandina Beach has beautiful restored Victorian homes, and historical buildings from the 1850's.

And then you have the beaches also

Light years away from Orlando and cookie cutter subdivisions.

Lake City, not much when we drove through, plus you are landlocked.

Lovely photos. By the looks of the old homes, that area doesn't get hit by hurricanes very often.

It's northeast Florida, almost Georgia. Statistically, the least likely to be hit by a hurricane compared to all other Florida coastal areas. Of course it only takes one. I will say that there are historic buildings all over the state, some of them having survived a hurricane or two or three. Stick built buildings, even. They don't make them like they use to.
