I think it's nice. I don't know what you mean by southern or kinda redneck. Can you explain? If I get an idea of what you are wanting to know I can answer the question, but I'm not super familiar with those terms. I know redneck from Jeff Foxworthy... if that's what you are referring to then I would say no, it's not redneck. But I'm not sure what you mean by southern.

Cape San Blas is the cape, Port St Joe is the town. Some (who can afford to) live on the cape, many live in PSJ or further inland.
The schools try hard with what they've got. It's what you make of it.
In my kid's graduating class of 91 students, one kid is going off to Yale, another U of Wisconsin, a third William and Mary (my kid is happy to be going to Florida State. )
This is a very isolated area. No malls, no movie theaters, basically one grocery store other than a few mom-and-pop places.
The newspaper comes out once a week.
Healthcare is basic, there is no hospital here, but there is a "Health Department" and several good private docs. They will break ground on the new hospital at some point (it was supposed to be this month, but is delayed while they figure out finances.) There is a new radiology department, but it offers limited services. Example: no mammograms.
There is actually a very excellent, state-of-the-art dentist.
The beaches are some of the most beautiful I've ever seen, and I've seen some gorgeous ones. The wildlife is incredible.
I have very much enjoyed the year-round climate.
It is definitely a small town, though.

Thanks cil for calling my attention to that area. I visited about 10 years ago. I have been trying to plan my summer vacation and with the price of flights this year, wanted someplace unique that I could drive to. Cape San Blas definitely delivers.

How about storms? How do both the cape and inland areas deal with hurricanes that affect the gulf?

Well, Dennis took his toll in '05. Storm surge is what you have to think about.

Fernandina Beach is a great small beach town and not overrun with tourists. It's slightly north of Jacksonville and just a short drive to city shopping and other amenities.

That's where we're moving in two weeks.

Sorry, I don't live at the Cape...would love to live in the area though. We have checked out living in Port St. Joe and they have good schools. Small classrooms and the folks we know that attend them are VERY happy. We have gotten to know many families in the area from vacationing there and they love living there! It's my ulitimate goal...may have to wait a few years, but we're working on it!

Sebastian is good. Close to Vero on one side or Palm Bay/Melbourne on the other. If you lived in Vero you're pretty close to West Palm Beach as well.
