Okay everyone, I'm looking for some advice on where to live in florida. My job allows me to live anywhere in the state. I'm married with two small children (under 10). We love the beach since I enjoy surfing. I grew up in Vero Beach but don't wish to go back there until at least the age of 75!

I'd like to be in a city that has an airport within driving distance (30-35 mins). We're looking for a city that is a compromise between having things to do but that is not overrun with massive traffic or crime.

What do you recommend?

I would recommend Tallahassee. (Tallahassee Regional)

If you want to be closer to the beach I would recommend

Panama City (New airport will open in May 10' With Southwest Airlines)

Fort Myers/Cape Coral, They have a nice airport (SW Florida Intl)

Jacksonville Beach (JAX Airport)

Fernandina Beach (Jax Airport)

All of these places are near an airport, and close to the beach.

People tell me Pensacola is crime ridden, (I can't reccomend it for that reason)

Jacksonville, Too many people to much traffic.

Remember there is little wave action in the Gulf for surfing.

My first thought is the eastern suburbs of Tampa, although you will be far from the beach but close to an airport.

Fort Myers would be OK but recognize the seasonal traffic is hell and the schools don't have a good reputation. You would be close to the beach and airport.

This is a tough combination of requirements.

Panama City Beach is still a pit and even with the Southwest flights, they'll still only have a third of the flights that VPS does and about a fifth of the flights that Pensacola gets.

If you want beach and Panhandle, I'd stay with the Ft. Walton Beach area- relatively low crime, a fair amount to do, and VPS is generally a good airport to fly out of. The downside is that surfing in the Gulf is less than ideal, and that most surfers I know plan on a couple of weekend trips to Jacksonville a couple time a year.
