I'm interested in moving my family from Texas to Florida. We will need some acreage as we have horses. I will also need to be fairly close to medical care due to the needs of some of my family. Right now we drive about 1:30-2:00 hrs for appointments and hospitals, it would be wonderful to cut that drive down some. I would really be thrilled to find an area that's more progressive or at the very least middle of the road politically. I live in a small Texas town, which kind of says it all. I'm wondering about the Gainesville area but am open to other ideas. Any information would be greatly appreciated

Try around Gainseville or a bit south and southwest.

Gainesville is a great recommendation. You'd be close to the horse capital that is Ocala yet also have access to Shands which is at UF and one of the best hospitals anyone could ask for.

Best part is your drive could be 30min or less. I have a horse we board in the Orlando area if you need to be near a bigger city for any reason and could offer more specific suggestions if needed.

Agree with Gainesville area. That being said, find the job first, then look for land. The Florida employment is much more service-oriented, government employee oriented than Texas. If you want to start a business, check out all the licensing required.

Gainesville might be a nice choice, but you may find there might be too many liberals there for a texan. You may want to seriously consider the outskirts of Ocala.

Gainesville is too liberal and blue unfortunately....go southwest of gains vile. I would look at the gulf coast counties north of Tampa.

St Pete is wonderfully liberal and progressive, but the horse thing means you might have to live in a neighboring city. Just a guess, I don't own horses. Gainesville would seem to be too small and limited, as it's college life all the time and not that much else.

Gainesville is too liberal??? You would HATE St Pete then! There are Clinton signs in nearly every yard right right now. Which is why I live here :] I'm from Mississippi, so I'm sure someone from Texas would love it here if they have liberal leanings. It's not Berkeley, it's "Florida liberal". Galveston was one of the few liberal places that I lived in Texas, and it wasn't all that liberal actually.

You might want to take advice on this w/ a grain of salt if it's coming from someone w/ the forum name of Redneck in it.
