Hello. I'm moving to Florida this summer from Georgia. I have decided not to sell my Georgia home & will be renting in Florida for a while until I decide it's definitely the place for me. My question is whether I should leave my vehicles registered in Georgia since I will be keeping my home here or whether I should register them in Florida? I've tried to find info on how the taxes compare between GA & FL, but haven't had much luck. I'm assuming FL's would be higher. What would you do? Thanks!

Default kskutie...

You've the right idea. Keep the GA reg. until you feel the place out. Also, some companies (should you seek work) may require FL license/reg. but you can cover that later should the time come. Plus you've the two location situation that allows you to keep your GA reg. (When I left NY for FL, I kept my NY reg. for about a year until an employe required I get FL reg.) When you decide to pull up GA stakes, you'll just renew to FL. Good luck. Best wishes!

I agree. Florida charges about $100/vehicle for new registrations. But seems that afterwards the tag renewal charges are less than Georgia's.

I thought by law when you have a residence in Florida you must register your vehicle there? Is this not true if you are only renting??

My husband lived in Florida over a year before he registered his car there. At first he rented, but he then bought a condo. That is when he registered his car.

As for me, I will neither be renting nor owning there. He has sole proprietorship of the condo. I waived my rights to it when he bought it. Yes, a spouse can do that under law.

If I don't own or rent (long term rental), don't have a permanent job there, and don't vote, I have not declared residency and can keep my registration where I want.

by law you are supposed to have fla tags after 30 days, in reality you could probably not comply and you won't get caught the caveat is if you live in a small town with a few cops they might get to know you or the car and then they'd cite you.
I'm concerned because where I live in NJ it is a small town and they know almost everyone, I will be back for about 6 weeks this summer with my FLA tags, I wonder if they'll nail me
