Good day! everyone --

I was so happy to learn about this helpful forum. It's so informative! That said, any comments one might have on where to relocate in Florida from up North for a wheelchair-user would be very appreciated. Here's my profile in a nutshell:

l. Age 60, female, confined to wheelchair, but otherwise in excellent health.

2. Able to purchase condo up to $100K.

3. Prefer an all-age community as opposed to 55+ only but will do the latter if that's the only viable alternative.

4. Concerned about access to paratransit -- a must-have unless I am situated where I can wheel to nearby groceries, shops, etc.

5. Good libraries are a must and any community cultural opportunities a plus.

I am a Midwesterner who grew up in small towns in the rural plains states, then spent most of my adult working life in northeastern cities. Besides the effects of cold, damp Autumns and icey Winters and intense traffic congestion everywhere, architectural barriers (eg, no ramps or curb-cuts, multistory buildings without elevators, etc.) basically restrict me to living indoors. I want the sunshine and easier access.

I used to vacation in Vero Beach prior to the 2004 hurricanes but my Web-based research suggests that Indian River county isn't set up for paratransit and that $100K could only buy me a mobile home anyway. I'm definitely looking for concrete block construction only! Broward county has a lot of communities and I heard good things about North Miami Beach, although that's probably too pricey.

I'm very adaptable when it comes to multiculural, ethnic, racial, and other diversity measures, etc. For the record, I am Catholic, I will need a community where help will be available for me to hire personal care, and I have 2 advanced degrees, which I would like to be able to use in meaningful, community volunteer activities.

Any comments or suggestions are earnestly appreciate. Thank you very much in advance.

I highly recommend The Villages, a 55+ community, but quite active with complete accessibility including golf carts. All manor of shopping, dining, entertainment, medical, etc is available. It is simply the best accessibility I have found. Situated over three counties, there is paratransit available as well.
