only two FL cities made the CNN list of top 100 places in America to live. Both of those places are in metro Orlando.

Lots of useful info everyone. How about central FL? Polk County around Winter Haven? There's an intriguing job opportunity in that area that has me doing some research.

Thanks!

Polk county is the pitts, and a terrible place to raise your child. It is a huge drug center and the statistics show.

that's true. If you want more of a rural area in central FL then look into the rural parts of metro Orlando (areas outside of clermont, and the chuluota area). If you want a suburban or urban atmosphere in central FL then look into metro Orlando or on the east coast of central FL

Last year, Oviedo was the ONLY city to make the list, at #100. In 2008, only three cities made it and they were all in South Florida (Weston, Coral Springs, Miramar). In previous years, Lake Mary (near Orlando) made as high up as number four on the list. That same year, Oviedo and Winter Springs were only other ones to make the list. The year before that, Coral Springs and Miramar were back on the list, along with Pembroke Pines and Boca Raton. In 2005, you could find Lutz, Hollywood (???), Lake Mary, and Ponte Verda Beach. I'm not too sure about the consistency of the lists...

What is your housing budget? That's the first thing I always ask when people want recommendation for an area to which to relocate.

Personally (and I can't wait for the tomatoes to start flying at me on this one), I prefer South Florida, and especially coastal Miami-Dade County south of Downtown. Coral Gables, South Miami, Pinecrest, East Kendall and vicinity are great places for families that are interesting, safe, have good schools, and have character moreso than almost anything else I have seen in Florida. I live in NYC now, but if I were to move back full-time to Florida to raise a child, that is where I would live.

My second choice goes to Broward County and my third goes to Palm Beach County. In general, I don't really like other parts of the state that much to recommend them, though that is not to say that there aren't nice places in Central Florida as well (there are: South Tampa, Davis Island, Winter Park, older/established areas of central Orlando, etc.)
