Hey everyone,

I'm getting stationed at Eglin AFB in late summer 2010 and wanted some information.

I'm a 28 year old single male. I want to live near the beach/water and near fun things to do (don't really care about bars or dance clubs (I hear there are lots of those around)).

I can afford around $1300 a month for a place, and would like 2 bedrooms and a newer upscale/trendy place if possible.

anyone have any suggestions on places to look that fit my needs? I definitely want to take advantage of living near the beach though, while I'm in the area. I've been landlocked enough in my life!!!

Thanks.

If its just you, you can get a 1 bedroom, maybe 2 if you look right.

You're pretty close to the beach wherever you are here. There are lots of bars, and thats the big thing to do around here, unless you get into boating. There are lots of wilderness areas to explore, and if you hunt as well.

All of the fun things to do are on the Island (Okaloosa) or in Destin. FWB has a few places.

I live in Niceville, more of a suburban area, lots of families here. I have a 3br/2ba for 1100 a month right now, but rents going up soon.

thanks.

so far...
the only two apartment complexes that i've seen that i've liked have been...

Legacy on the Bay
and
Alexan Henderson Beach

both in Destin.

Anyone else know of any really nice apartment complexes? Or have heard bad things about either one of these?

Alexan is totally new, and you'd probably be the first person into the unit. It's also directly across the street from the loading docks for Destin Walmart, so I wouldn't take a place on that side of the complex. Legacy on the Bay is a nice complex about 10-15 years old that seems well-kept, but you will curse the traffic on your evening commute all summer long when you've got to fight the tourist crowd.

For some surprising reason, there just aren't many big apartment complexes in the area, though there are a fair number of 4-8 unit buildings. Local MLS site tends to show a lot of rentals outside complexes:

EmeraldCoastHomesOnline.com

When we first moved down here, we spent three years living on the eastern part of Okaloosa Island. It can take a little work to find a long term rental there that's been updated recently, but you're a block from the beach access (and may have a slight ocean view) and it's a safe enough area to walk home alone from the clubs on the Boardwalk or by Fudd's after a few beers as long as you aren't so blitzed that you wander into traffic.

It's also a far better commute to base than Destin or Santa Rosa Beach/Miramar Beach would be.

I am moving to eglin in late fall. I have been looking around and I like the somerset apartments they are within a couple mins walk to the beach. I dont know how much a two bedroom cost but I know a one bedroom is 760. They do have a no pet policy. I hope this helps.

If you want to save rent money, the further north and east you live from Eglin, the greater your savings will be. Plus, you still be within 40 minutes to the Destin beaches / water sports / nightlife . If this interests you, then consider : the Crestview area and Milton/Pace areas. Its more country-fied in these areas also.

40 min. max. drive to Eglin in the morning.

If you want to live real close to Eglin, then Fort Walton Beach or Niceville or Valpariso .

Pace is a good 60 miles from Eglin. Even going 80mph on I-10, you aren't going to make it to the East Gate in less than an hour because you hit the 'Crestview 500' traffic on SR 85.

Given the hours so many of the people in blue put in, I really couldn't see signing up for a minimum two hours a day in the car on top of that.
