My husband and I live in Panama City Beach, Florida with our two young sons 1 and 3 and we are in desperate need of a major life change. We lived in Destin for 7 years but moved here two years ago because my husbands company is here and the commute was too long.
Maybe its mid life crisis or just tired of the Redneck Riviera but we want outta here. We miss a city= I'm from Atlanta and Hubby is from Miami but we don't want to go to either of those cities.

Ideally we would like an upscale mid size city with low crime and good schools on the coast and within 2 hours of a major city. Top on the list so far is Sarasota but concerned it may be too old and possibly unfriendly to newcomers?

Husband will sell business and maybe start another(insurance) so jobs are not an issue. Most important we want a diverse, artist and intelligent community where we can enjoy our life not just live day to day! Suggestions greatly appreciated!!!

I don't know if you will see this, as your post was some time ago, but I think that you will find there are plenty of young families in Sarasota. I wouldn't recommend it for singles, looking for a life of excitement, but with little kids, it is a pretty nice place to be. A bit pricey, and jobs are hard to come by.
The schools here are pretty good. My youngest is in a lovely elementary school, and after school hours kids flock to the playground and playing fields while parents sit and visit and watch them play. It is the nicest thing... a really great use of the school grounds! I have never seen it in other communities where I've lived.
I don't know that it is as urban as you might like, but it has lots of charms. Worth checking out, at very least! Good luck!

If you don't mind could you tell me what elementary school your child attends? I have done some research on schools and the Phillippi Shores school looks fantastic which would be good because we were thinking we might live on Siesta Key.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
