In a newer subdivision...built 2004-2005 with curbs, sidewalks, retention ponds and storm drains....lots of infrastructure.

Most people would be shocked where their actual property line is. The city may own 10 or 15 feet of the street side of their property and they don't even know it. You plant grass and trees or build driveway, but should the city want to use the property or widen the road you come home one day and find a back hoe on what they thought was their property or a new side walk almost at you front door with your tree lined front yard gone.
I have seen neighborhoods with sidewalks running right through the middle of the frontyards, maybe 20ft from the front door. There's no way I would buy a house like that, I don't want strangers walking through what I feel is MY personal space.

I see it all the time. People have a gravel drive in front of their house and grass and trees. Usually you look and see the water meter way up in the front yard. That is usually the give a way where the city property starts. They buy the house and don't have a clue. It is hard to believe but people can be pretty stupid.

I noticed that too when I was googling. I like it..reminds me of the street I grew up on.

That is pretty funny - I like my space too - but in NYC - we are so limited on space that I guess the sidewalk thing seems normal to me. I did have these strange guys stop and sit on my stoop one day though - it was totaly strange to me, because if I didn't know the person, I would never just sit on their stoop - I asked them to leave and of course they were insulted but boy that was weird for me. So, I'm with you on that - the further the sidewalks are away the better!

Another thing... most lawn grasses in FL are St Augustine or Centipede, these are running type grasses that will completely cover a curb if it's not edged regularly. The only people who edge their curbs are people who REALLY take care of their yards (like me), but most people don't seem to bother.
