We want to move to Florida in 2 years. I will have my master's degee in social work and my husband an LPN. We want to live on the Gulf, we want to work in the city, we also like having horses. We also want to be near a beach, like 45 minutes. Is there such a place? Also, our children will be 11 and 12 by then. One is very athletic. Thanks!

Look at areas outside Tampa, like Odessa.

Visit Sarasota and then check inland for an area for horses. Beautiful beaches (Lido Beach), convenient shopping, and some rural land left inland.

Thanks for the info. I have a friend that lives in Palm Harbor, I'll stay with her for a few days and check things out.
Thanks again!

If the two of you can get jobs in your Field, then one of the most rural areas of FLorida is the NW Corner of the State near Pensacola... north of I-10 . Youd be 45-55 minutes from super beaches in Destin and Ft. Walton (same to Pensacola) and be in agricultural zoned areas ideal for horse riding yet 15-20 minutes to larger towns. Consider living in : Mossy Head, Baker, or northern outlying areas of Crestview/Pace/ and Milton if you want true peace and quiet. Living near major metropolitan cities like Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and the like...will offer you alot of concrete , a hurried atmosphere, less friendly people, much higher taxes, and stress ... although youd have more to choose from with jobs. Thats my opinion from someone who appreciates a more country-fied place to live that is serene , quiet, and full of nature.

I love the North West part of the state too. But my job is here in Tampa and I like that too. A lot will depend on where you can find a job. If one of you is able to line something up ahead of time, that will probably be the best way to guide you to an area. I think there is agricultural land near many of the decent sized cities in Florida, with the exception of Miami. Here in Tampa there are numerous possibilities, as a previous poster mentioned. If you do come for a visit be sure to check out Odessa and Lutz. There are also some areas further east that are still in the Tampa BAy area but will be further from the beach.

You should look into Sarasota county. North Port Estates is about 30 minutes from the beaches and it's all 3-5 acres. I've seen some newer homes go for under $200K in that area.

The Sarasota school system is one of the best in the state. Like the rest of the Nation, the job situation is pretty poor. The unemployment rate is somewhere around 13%.
