Use the Amdro or similar products that you can get from Home Depot to spot kill mounds. Then get a spreader and some general ant and insecticide granuals and do the entire lawn. You will see new mounds pop up when you kill a big one, make sure that you kill those too as soon as you see them.

Just stay on top of this for a month or so, and you will be able to control your ant problem fairly easily. Red are smaller than fire ants, they bite, but don't inflict the damages that fire ants do. They are fairly easy to get rid of.

You need to be vigilent in pursuing fire ants. If you are not alergic to them and get stung, it feels like a wasp sting, but can leave a large welt and blister. If you are alergic to firea ants, I've seen people's feet and ankles swell up just from one or two stings.
