I rarely eat out because restaurant kitchens are usually filthy, I have a severe shellfish allergy and most restaurants around here cook and serve shellfish, and restaurant food is mostly very unhealthy. There are some restaurants around here without any shellfish on the menu; they are mostly Mediterranean, Kosher, or Middle Eastern/Halal. I eat at those restaurants occasionally, but not often. Honestly I prefer to eat at home.

I do not like to eat at my parents' house because I don't think they keep their kitchen clean enough so I am going to start inviting them over here from time to time for family meals. My boyfriend's parents keep their kitchen very clean, are very good cooks, and work around my food allergy when they know we are going to be there, so we eat there maybe once a week or so.

I do not like a lot of processed food because most of it is junk loaded with sugar/HFCS and sodium, among other things. I prefer to do my own food processing, thanks. ;-) I am not totally insane though; I buy dried pasta, sometimes pasta sauce in jars, the occasional bag of chips or some candy as a treat, etc. I also buy some items in cans like Ro-Tel, tomato paste, beans, etc. But I try to keep processed foods to a minimum.

"Processed" is an EXTREMELY broad term folks. It's not some automatic evil or inherently makes food "bad."

When I say "processed" I am thinking of the (mostly) crap stuff that is in the middle aisles of the supermarket like cake mixes, spaghetti sauce in jars, instant noodles/mac and cheese, stuff like that. I do buy spaghetti sauce in jars from time to time but I choose it pretty carefully. To me most processed food is junk.

I agree with ya there. On all points regarding processed foods, actually.

I don't. In fact, it's patently silly IMO and only backs my point. Being "processed" has NOTHING to do with a given product's nutritional value. It's all in how it's done and other specifics.

And what's w/the "middle of the aisles" thing? ??

Middle aisles, not middle of the aisles. He's referring to the formula supermarkets use to display stuff. For example, perimeter items (meat, dairy, produce, fresh bakery), middle aisle items (canned stuff, sauces, boxed dinners, flour, sugar etc)

It's patently silly to know from whence your food came? To know exactly what went into it's production and that it's as natural and healthly as possible?

In that case, I'm silly.

Right. The healthiest food in the store is on the perimeter, i.e. fresh dairy, fresh meat, poultry, and fish, and fresh produce. I rarely go into the "middle aisles" except for cat food, cleaning products, cooking oil, dried legumes, oatmeal, and coffee. Occasionally dried pasta and jarred marinara sauce or salsa.
