The myth is they were invented at the torch, which funnily enough is a nudi-bar. But now they're served all over town. There was an article in the paper a while ago about the origin. Apperently the chef was tired of throwing away the sirloin tips.
This is supposedly the original recipe from Chef Milo, from back in the fourties. They say the Torch still makes the best, I've never had theirs, but think Big Bun Drive-in has the best I've had.
We dipped them in ketchup and/or mustard or steak sauce. I believe (actually pretty certain) that they were baked and didn't contain as many ingredients as the recipe listed. I'm certain it was just steak, a little seasoning, and the breading (much like school lunch fish sticks!).
Old thread, but, yes, I have eaten my fair share. And love them! Been a while since I made them. Must be served with cocktail sauce and "fry sauce". Ketchup, mayo, horseradish, and some seasonings.
