bjh, they look like a grape but you can't eat the outside.
Thanks. I wonder if that's what we called mustang grapes when I was a kid. Sounds like a likely misunderstanding of muscadine.

They're for sale all over the place here lately. I really like the taste, but don't like the seeds so much, so I didn't buy any.

Few who have breathed in the fruity, musky odor of Muscadine grapes will ever forget it. Muscadines are native to the Southeastern United States and were found growing wild by the early colonists. Their sweet juice and chewy pulp have made them a favorite fruit of Southerners ever since. Muscadines, with their unique flavor have been used to make jams and wine since the seventeenth century. Muscadines have been used for making commercial fine wines and port wines.
A purée of muscadine skins and pulp is an excellent source also of dietary fiber, essential minerals and carbohydrates and is low in fat. Muscadine purée powder has more dietary fiber than oat or rice bran. Studies have shown positive effects of muscadine phenolics against blood, colon and prostate cancers.

I love them. They aren't as easy to eat as seedless Thompson grapes, etc. but the flavor is completly different. They have a unique aroma and they're delicious. They are a once-a-year treat for me.

Muscadines, like cherries, are worth the seeds that you have to spit out. It's no big deal.
