I only use Safeway and Kroger (which covers most of their chain).
Albertsons here in Gallup no longer uses them as the population just doesn't understand them....
It actually is brilliant because it helps them determine trends. Like, do customers always buy Heinz Ketchup or will they buy Hunts' if it's on sale?
And it's not that inconvenient. My supermarket scans the card or takes your license if you're missing your card. It's free and it helps them serve you better... I used to work at this supermarket and I never understood why people were against it. Trust me, it's not about spying on you at all. It helps them do better business.
They will also send you coupons if you haven't shopped there in a while.
None of the grocery stores in my town have one, but the gas stations do. the only difference is you build up points with every purchase and then redeem your points for coupons. Since we stop there anyway to get gas we got the card. We build up enough points to get a free $100 gas card every year. Works out well for us and since they have the keyring cards, not that inconvienent at all.
They're a PITA. Just give me the damn sale price already.
Stores can do that without shopper cards. They're completely unnecessary.
agreed. except.....
for the one time when i lost my keys [which had one of the card/keychain deals on them] and the finder dropped them off at the grocery store, which allowed me to get them back. that alone save me at least $300.
requiring the card to get the sales price, i'm not too fond of.
I didn't like them because of the cards that they make you carry around. One of the discount programs allowed entry of a phone number instead, which worked well for me. The good thing is that you are targeted for discounts and coupons for things you actually purchase, which makes a lot of sense.
Over the past 2 years I've done I do almost all of my shopping at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods anyway, and as far as I know, neither of those stores use discount cards. So my card usage has dropped to just about zero.
I use one when it is a big savings. Especially on meats and other high priced items. Normally I stock up and then shop a market closer to home for the most all around savings to stretch the dollar. No harm no foul.
I had a cards for Ralph's and Albertson's but I lost them, so now I just enter my phone number on the credit-card/debit device. Lots easier that way anyhow. Try it, you'll like it.
By the way, Smart & Final eliminated their discount cards awhile ago - good move.
