I love fresh figs, when I was a child we had a fig tree. Nothing better than a dinner of figs, cheese, prosciutto, pecans, and a roll. Miss those happy days.

I have never bought fresh ones, but I love things made with them. You can make a yummy fig spread for appetizers with them and Chobani yogurt Bites has an awesome fig orange zest flavor.
Here in Southern California, figs grow on fig trees (of course) and we can get them fresh in many stores at this time of year. Mission black figs or calimyrna amber figs are the most common. I like the fresh better than the dried ones - the fresh are two or three times larger than the dried figs and have a lighter flavor and texture because the drying process concentrates the sugars into a smaller piece of fruit. Figs have no large pit inside
FYI - Dates grow on mostly on Medjool date palm trees and are a completely different and much sweeter item with a narrow stone or pit inside. Most dates produced in the US are grown in the extremely hot and dry Coachella Valley, south of Palm Springs around the city of Indio. The annual Date Festival and Riverside County Fair is held in Indio each year in February (when it is much cooler than the summer temps that are usually above 110F every afternoon). The climate of the Coachella Valley is almost identical to central Iraq, where dates originate and where the majority of dates consumed in the Middle East and Europe are produced.
