I want to make some molded chocolate for a themed birthday party next month. I've found the appropriate molds, but was hoping someone could help me out with the chocolate.

I've seen the bags of large chocolate and chocolate-flavored discs for sale but I think I've eaten candy made with those before and they didn't taste very nice. (Kind of chalky and overly sweet, I think).

I'd like the chocolates to taste nice - does anyone know of a higher quality chocolate made for melting and molding, or is that something I can do with just regular high quality baking chocolate?

Trader Joe's should have Caillebaut melting chocolate in milk and dark varieties.

You can use regular baking chocolate, or chocolate chips. The Ghirardelli candy melts taste pretty good. The Wilton ones do not.

If you need colored chocolate, you can buy oil-based candy colors at the craft store. You can also use petal dust or luster dust on chocolates.

Yup this^^ no matter what chocolate you use. We been using Guittard Chocolate for family candy making recipes probably longer than Sees candy. I remember my grandma joking that Sees candy sent out spys back in the 50's to find the best homemade candy recipes to steal for thier business.

I buy 10 pound blocks from Winco in Salem Oregon. There is no brand on the block and I don't know if you have a Winco, or if your local Wiinco would get their chocolate from the same place.

It is good chocolate, though, at a very good price.

More than likely Hershey or Nestle.

No, it is not. I asked and was told what brand, although it was a brand name I've never heard before and don't remember what is was. It is not any chocolate that is available in small bars. It is very different in taste and texture than either Hershey or Nestle and doesn't have the wax content.
