I think the laziness/treat factor will always be there where we will always stop for some kind of fast food. There is something on each places menu that we like.
Mcdonalds, the only thing we eat there is the fresh baked cookies and the drinks and smoothies.
I prefer a Burger King burger or Rallys/Checkers but rarely go there for the whole Burger/ Frys with a drink thing, when I end up ordering one for my daughter and then one for me...the cost is crazy.
If we want an entire meal we are more likely to order off the dollar menu at either Taco Bell, Wendy's or Burger King then the big meals so called deals.
We love KFC but its horrible for you, we also love Popeyes but its very expensive like KFC. I have also loved Long Johns but don't often eat that anymore unless we hit the location that is a Taco Bell AND a Long Johns in the same place.
I am looking forward to being back in Texas where I can find a lot of Dairy Queen locations. I miss the Chicken Fried Steak Fingers with country Gravy. We had some when we were there this summer and my daughter loved it just as she did when she was very small. That was when I realized I was going to have to start ordering more food so there would be enough for both of us.
Honestly, besides the high sodium, KFC isn't really all that awful. You can make pretty good choices with minimal effort. Burgers are likely worse.
For ~ 700 cals at KFC: you can have an original recipe breast, coleslaw and a biscuit. If you were actually trying to be low cal, you could have something grilled, the green beans and a biscuit and stick to your diet target.

I am in Texas and I wish I could send you some to tide you over. I love Dairy Queen, it's like a little bit of nostalgia for me with some of the locations having the older booths to sit in.
