i have 4 and use them for al sorts of things, but they are not nearly enough. one supermarket here actually gives you points for using them, which add up to savings on future purchases.
About 10. I use them whenever I go to the store. The Jewel near my house contributes a nickel to the local high schools every time people use reusable bags, and those nickels go into a fund for environmental education programs. Target deducts a nickel for every reusable bag I use, which is nice because I might use three or four bags there.
My dishwasher is packed so tight with them, I can't get the door shut. Light plastic produce bags n the left (to re-wrap), and carry-home shopping bags on the right (to line the trash can).
10-15 at least and I use them all the time. I keep 1/2 in the car and kind of "rotate" as needed.
I find that I can toss them in the washer and most hold up. All of mine were either "free" or some sort of a gift-with-purchase.
Sturdy shopping bags aren't just about being "green" to me. I actually prefer them. I like the fact that you can carry so much more (less trips back and forth to the car when unloading at home), I like that they never break, and I love the longer handles that I can loop over my shoulder.
Now and then I forget my bags and end up with a few plastic bags, which I use to line the bathroom wastebaskets. I like my reusable bags better too. I have some that fold like a regular brown paper bag that are perfect for boxed items, and I have some soft, roomy nylon bags that I pack with bread, bags of pretzels, produce--all the weird shaped stuff.
