We had both. If it was a rib or loin it was roast beef. If was a lesser cut it was pot roast. I always liked the pot roast best, but then my family never had prime rib or filet.

So what is you family? Pot roast or roast beef?
We ate both growing up. I was a kid in the 1960's, before beef was deemed evil and before boneless chicken breasts were in wide use.

Roast beef growing up, pot roast now. Chuck roast, slow cooker for 10 hours with a can of golden mushroom soup, add potatoes, carrots, sliced mushrooms 3 hours before dinner. Easy, yummy!

Roast beef can be great but if I'm making it myself I'd rather have pot roast simply because then you get all the other stuff in the pot roast too.

Both. Growing up and for my own family.

Roast beef comes with mashed potatoes.

Pot roast comes with potatoes cooked in the juice and Amish egg noodles.

Great. Now I'm hungry.

Searing is so important. Certainly locks in the flavors.

some roasts we call pot roasts and some roasts we call oven roasts,,,,

pot roasts are

chuck roasts, bottom round roasts

oven roasts (dry cooking heat)

rib roast (a k a prime rib)
sirloin or round tip roast (from the knuckle)
top round roast
sirloin strip roast
top butt sirloin roast (also known as a spoon roast)
eye round roast

a bottom round back rump roast can swing both ways,,,as an oven roast or pot roast

one of my first girlfriends mother use to call any roast cooked in the oven a roast beef

and any roast cooked in a pot,,a pot roast

as a cook,,you can cook them any way you wish,,,i love the slow cookers/crock pots,,,no matter if its an oven roast or (especially) a chuck roast,,,these are great
however,,i would not cook any very expensive roast in a slow cooker,,,like a prime rib or tenderloin

here's a good pot roast cooking video
