This is me, too. I like food to have a bit of a kick, as long as it melds and complements the other flavors present. I don't like food that tastes like burning above everything.
Yep, a little kick is nice on foods where a little hot works well with the other flavors. No burning of the mouth or digestive track is good.
But not hot to the degree that it makes me angry and I can't enjoy any flavors beyond "nuclear meltdown".
Ever taste something that's fire to the 100th power and it makes you so angry that you were game enough to stick it in your mouth? That's when it's too hot for me.
I like spicy, but mostly from Jalapenos. Don't like Tobasco unless it's in a bloody mary. A bit of Cayenne is always good for soups and veggies. Can't eat much garlic (I like it, but it doesn't like me so much).
Love hot/sweet mixes. Jalepeno jelly, cheese stuffed bacon wrapped jalapenos grilled with sweet bbq sauce. A good chutney, mango/jalapeno topping for fish, mmmmmm getting hungry now!
I always buy the biggest bottle of "Texas Pete" hot sauce....
When we get fresh shrimp, we would make the cocktail sauce from scratch..always saying: "add enough horseradish to make your nose burn when you eat it"
Hot and spicy are two different things of course....love spicy as well, Indian, Thai, etc. Chili-garlic paste is one of my favorite condiments, use it a lot on a variety of dishes and soups.
Heat has its place. In Curry, Cajun or Mexican, I like it very hot, I can eat Tabasco with a spoon. I like beef with about a pound of black pepper on it. I never use bell peppers, I prefer poblanos. But most other things, I prefer not hot at all, and allow their own subtle flavors to dominate.
Went out for Indian food tonight, BF got chicken biryani, and when the woman asked him where on the hotness scale he'd like it, he told her as hot as they go. He loved it, but I tasted it, and it was the kind of thing where it migrated from your mouth to your nostrils and instantly made your nose run like a faucet. Just not pleasant when eating in public, IMO.

He probably had Vindaloo, my favorite.
