Any product that is prone to bugs hatching spends three days in the freezer before it hits my pantry. Result: nothing ever hatches.

I store my flour in the fridge.

That's a good tip....I'm going to try that freezer trick.

YUK

Usually when I buy flour I put it in a gallon ziplock bag with a bay leaf on the bottom to "discourage" visitors. If I bought it and it had bugs it would go back to the store or in the trash...I would never be able to eat or serve anything I knew had crawling things in it.

goodness! flour is not that expensive, and just dont buy the 50 lb sack! if you use flour sometimes, just keep a small sack in the house, and if you see bugs in it, throw it AWAY!

The problem is that you don't get those bugs from your home - you BUY them at the store!

elnina is correct.

I freeze my excess flour especially before holiday baking I stock up big time.
Make sure you put it in a freezer ziploc... not a storage ziploc.
I only buy freezer bags.

Once opened flour is put into tightlt sealed container you can always put a bay leaf in the flour.
Always check exp/use by date on bag.

Never had bugs in my flour. I do put right away into an airtight container at home. For those feeling queasy don't ever look up what human skin mites look like. They are crawling around on your skin right this minute.

Again... it doesn't matter how airtight your container AT HOME IS, or how low the freezer temp is - you buy those bugs in your flour at the store...

Besides eating and spoiling food, flour beetles may also be carriers of bacteria, molds and parasites. They are an intermediate host for the dwarf tapeworm, a parasite found in rats and mice that live off beetle-infested foods. Humans can become infected with the tapeworms by unwittingly eating infected beetles hiding in contaminated food.
