Fried grits are actually quite good. You let them firm up in the fridge, slice them, flour them, then fry them in butter. It's what we do with leftovers. Same thing as polenta. I've also used them for bases of things like eggs benedict when doing a southern version or using polenta for an Italian version.
Other than using them as a base for eggs how would you eat them? Sweet toppings sound terrible, can you recommend some kind of savory version to try? I'm always willing to try new, even if it sounds weird to me.

A side dish with chicken, pork chops, meatloaf, with gravy or whatever sauce you are using. I'll have to think about it for anything more as those and above are what we usually use them for.
Ever make fried mashed potato cakes with leftover mashed potatoes? Same thing basically.

My mother was doing the fried mashed potato cakes way back in the '70. I loved those. Grits with crunched up bacon in there. NOT that imitation bacon bits crap.
Logan Turnpike Grits are definitely the best. I buy them at Whole Foods (though it might be a regional item). They have soooo much more flavor than Quaker.
Bob's Red Mill are good also if you can't find Logan Turnpike.
Aunt Jemima and Jim Dandy old-fashioned grits are good. The Kroger quit carrying them, so I have to go to a locally-owned store to find them. We had a breakfast supper this week with bacon, cheese grits, and pecan waffles. It was so good!
I’m fine with the Quaker brand, but I’m not a self-respecting southerner.
My only grits rule is plain with butter - I don’t care for cheese grits or other casserole recipes.
How about shrimp and grits?
