You'd probably describe me in wildly different ways, depending on where you found me shopping.
At the Farmers' Market, you'd conclude that I am a fiend for massive quantities of fresh produce - the market cart that I take each week is full to overflowing with everything from asparagus to zucchini. You'd also figure that I'm rather obsessive about free-range beef, chicken and pork, and you'd notice that I'm rather fond of premium cheese, honey and maple syrup. So that adds up to - what? A fresh food fanatic? A locavore? An aging hippie? All of the above?
If you found me at the local cooperative store, you'd decide that I must be on a fruit, fish and yogurt diet, with kefir and lactose-free milk to drink. You'd conclude that I must really like sugarfree 100% cranberry juice, and when you spied the Cook's Illustrated magazine in the basket, you'd probably assume that I love to cook.
If you run into me at the mainstream grocery store a couple of miles away, you'd probably assume that I don't cook at home much, if at all. You'd find things like TP, paper towels, ketchup, mustard, pickles, cat litter, occasionally a can of black beans or chick peas, but very little in the way of actual food in my cart. You'd likely conclude that I'm one of those types who eats at restaurants for most of my meals, and that my refrigerator and stove are only there because they came with the house.
So while it's fun to speculate sometimes, I think it can be misleading to try to draw too many conclusions about what you see in the baskets of other shoppers. You never know what else they bring home from other places.
Ha! Gotcha! I'm married (over 31 years) and I'm an omnivore with an extremely talented chef for a husband! <grin> As I said, it can be misleading to try to draw too many conclusions from the grocery cart.
