I usually set up a weekly budget (monthly doesn't seem to work as well for us due to the fact that my husband travels 99.9% of the time). Some weeks I have a small budget ($25-$30) and some weeks my budget is a little higher. I like to stay under $50 a week on average for the whole month.
Anyway last night I went grocery shopping and spent $72.45 I was actually able to buy enough stuff that I shouldn't have to go shopping next week.
Here is a general list of what I got...
6 bags of the Steam Fresh vegetables
Turkey Smoked Sausage
Pork Tenderloin
1 pound of ground beef
Bag of frozen Chicken breast
Meat Loaf seasoning
Milk
Eggs
Pizza Crust
Fresh Mozzarella (fresh as in not shredded)
Tapioca Pudding
6 Yogurts
Egg Noodles
2 loafs of bread
Rice Pilaf
Yellow Rice
2 Cans of Cream of Mushroom soup
2 Canned Pineapple
1 can Mandarin Oranges
Box of sweet in low packets
Cake mix
Grapes
Cucumber
Banana's
Nectarine's
Apples
6 Broccoli heads
Red Onion
Sunflower Seeds
5 pound bag of potatoes
I don't buy all the same things every week, because I stock up on things I need when they go on sale. Some things I buy weekly:
cans of cat food (since the stuff I get doesn't go on sale, I buy it in the pet store, not the supermarket)
milk
sub rolls for hubby's lunch
chicken salad for hubby's lunch
bananas
fixings for salad
I buy ground beef when it's on sale and freeze it in 1-pound packages. I usually only use 1 pound weekly (to make my meatballs) so a 6-pound purchase will last six weeks.
I buy soda for hubby when it's on sale because he's picky and only drinks pepsi, and never in cans. I stock up on "spring water" when it's on sale, because that's all I drink. Toilet paper - I buy in bulk, once every 3 months or so. Same with paper towels. And so on and so forth.
Most weeks when I'm not stocking up on something, I'll spend around $60 for myself, my spouse, and my cat. But when I'm stocking up on things we use regularly and are on sale, it can go over $100.
My budget is $85-125 and I'm a single female. Here's an example of what I typically buy, and I usually have meat left over at the end of the month:
15 pounds of meat (typically chicken and roast, sometimes some hamburger) $15
2 pounds of shrimp: $12
10 packs of xyz brand pasta sides, whatever's cheapest. $10
16 lbs of frozen veggies: $16
5 lbs potatoes: $3
2 onions: $1.50
3 gallons of apple juice: $5
5 jars of pasta sauce: $7
gallon of milk: $2.50
bread: $1
Cereal: $4
snacks: $20

A gallon of milk for $2.50? Wow that is cheap. Here in Maine, for 1% we are paying over $4 a gallon.
WE shop once a month or so at Sams and we spend about $150.00 including cleaning supplies, paper products, animal food and litter. Every week I spend between $30 and $50 at the local market. Once in awhile I hit Aldi's but when I do that i spend less at the market. I would guess, for 2 of us we spend about $70.00 a week. We eat pretty much what we want but I am a sale shopper for sure. I shop for what is on sale and then plan a menu for the week. I stick with it pretty closely.
Winter is coming, so I will stock up at Costco. Hate coming home with nothing to eat in the house, and I hate going to the store when it is cold. Time to start thinking about that stuff....
I just moved, and have nothing in my new place...just bought some basics for a few weeks...
Don't really have a 'budget,' so to speak, but we always get bread, milk, fruit, veggies, meat, juice, cheeses...sometimes pate and wine and beer. We've really gone off of soda...we're doing a lot more of the whole foods and no chemical additives thing. Processed out. Outside circle of the store in.
