Well, looks like I am alone. Which is fine. I am going to make a small turkey breast, with stuffing, squash, cranberry, no dessert. I could have guilt tripped my kids to come see me, but they are all busy working, doing college, one is going to his GF for dinner...hmmm, wonder if this is getting serious? One will be with her Dad. Weather and travel can be so iffy this time of year, and plane tickets quite pricey.
Yes, I suppose I could go be with friends, but no one likes being a "third wheel". So, I am fine alone. Well, Jasper will be with me.
I would like to remind folks with pets, Thanksgiving seems to tantalize pets. They smell all this wonderful food all day. And you are usually putting dishes on the table, and going back to the kitchen for other things. One year, our cat was not sure why all this food was on the table, and no one around, he jumped on the table and stole a roll. Another year, our dog tried to grab the whole turkey before we were going to cut it, we were busy making gravy.
So, just give them a few bites, and don't leave food alone, unsupervised. You never know when some "counter or table surfing" will occur.
Besides being a gloomy holiday for personal reasons, one thing I don't like about Thanksgiving is the food. We usually celebrate it with my late father's side of the family, and the dishes they traditionally bring represent about the worst in Midwestern cooking. The quality is not low; the problem is traditional Midwestern fare does not appeal to my taste buds. There's the turkey, which is almost tasteless; the green bean casserole (I hate anything involving green beans, except Ethiopian fasoli, but then the green beans are so cooked that they don't taste like green beans), and a number of other awful dishes I can't remember right now. I've traditionally gotten a minimal amount of turkey, a minimal amount of mashed potatoes, gravy, and a bunch of buns - but to make matters worse, in recent years they have switched over to sweet "Hawaiian" buns! Therefore, I probably consume less calories on Thanksgiving then I do on your average day of the year. My mom's side of the family is the same way. I keep my lips closed about my dislike of Thanksgiving food around them, however. Is anybody else the same way?
(My favorite cuisines are Indian and Ethiopian, by the way - just about the opposite of slab-of-meat-intensive Midwestern cuisine)

I don't mind being a "third wheel". I shall (maybe) be dining out with a relative. If not, I have a backup plan... or two.

Spending the holiday alone can actually be more relaxing and enjoyable than spending it stressed out with family.
What are you serving/having for dessert at Thanksgiving?
