I do not think $8.00 is unresaonable for a salad. If it's just lettuce and tomato then yes that's expensive but if it had shrimp, steak or chicken then $8.00 seems about right and some places charge more than that. At most steak houses by me a ceasar salad is at least $7.00. But it's a decent size. There is a diner by me that serves a chef salad and charges $10.00. What the OP's sister should have done was find out where they were going for lunch first, then look at the menu before being seated. I am not sure how much money she thought lunch was going to be but at any sit down place including fridays, expect to pay at least $12.00 for lunch if not more. The only way to get lunch under $ 10.00 is by getting food on the dollar menu at McDonald's or any other fast food joint that has a dollar menu. She must not go out to eat that much.

I do not think it was too much if it was a GOOD salad. Big and fresh and full of vegetables, with decent dressing.

We all know what lettuce costs, and it is cheap to make a superlative salad. If it was a side salad with a puddle of water in the bottom and a slice of cuke and a cherry tomato, with a plastic dressing packet, then your sister was justified.

I guess you know that the price of foods on a menu are to cover overhead also. A restaurant should use something cheap like a salad to wow the customers by thinking they are getting more not less than they pay for.

I am ordering a $7.99 salad for lunch today.

It is a huge pile of baby spinach, with sliced strawberries, toasted walnuts, crumbled bleu cheese, and prosciutto. Balsamic dressing. I wish they gave you more proscuitto but this is still an AWESOME salad. Served with a basket of good italian bread.

I spend $8 a day on my salad. Medeterranean style (all veggies, no meat, hold the cheese please) and I'm OK with it.

Tossed salad? Where I'm at, thats $6.
