I just prepped a piece of swordfish for the grill, tonight's dinner, and there was a worm in it. The worm was dead but nonetheless it was a worm. I was aware of cod and worms but I never knew of swordfish being susceptible to worms. I love fish, or at least I always did.

You should be more careful of where you shop. Worms do not invade swordfish flesh, they are deposited onto it by unsanitary prep surfaces. Its charming to buy fish right down on the piers and docks, but when they are filleted there anything can be found on your fish.

Yes, it's my fault. I dropped $24 at Moderator cut: see comment , a high end grocery store in MA, and got wormy fish. Thanks.

Absolutely parasitic worms are carried by fish. Now fish that is flash frozen at sea like most sushi grade kills the parasites instantly. However most aquatic parasites live in the intestinal tracts of fish and migrate out through the gut and into the flesh if the fish is not gutted quickly enough after catching. Now you could have also got a piece from an animal that was sick and infested with parasites before it was caught. There is really no way of know unless the worm was examined. I would tell you fish monger about the incident.

I would let the store know. I've bought a lot of Swordfish over the years and have never found worms, thought I know it can happen, the fish monger should have noticed.

Ewww, we had grilled tuna just last night.

I keep tropical fish, and I know that fish can carry parasites/worms, but I never thought of them on the fish I actually eat. Unfortunately I'm sure that's probably natural. It probably wouldn't be a health hazard to you other than any pyschological damage from seeing the worm, but I still wouldn't want to eat a fish that had worms. Definitely tell your fish monger!
