I'm kind of a collector of cast iron cookware, I probably have way more than I need, and I'm always looking for something I don't have - different sizes, shapes, whatever.

I saw what looks to me like a type of Dutch oven, but with a grated lid, on the Goodwill auction site:

shopgoodwill.com - #9169513 - John Wright Cast Iron Casserole Dish w/Open Lid - 1/9/2012 8:05:00 PM

I have never seen something like that, and to be honest, I don't even know what the purpose of it would be. What would you cook with a lid like that?

The auction is up on this item this evening and I'm debating whether or not to bid on it.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

It is a cast iron humidifier. You fill it with water and put it on the stove. We used to use one on top of the pellet stove when we lived in Montana.

Thanks. That makes sense.

I do have a wood stove (my only heat source) but I have other things that I can use to put humidity into the house (although I rarely bother) so I'll pass on this item.

Thanks again. You saved me from bidding on something I don't need. LOL
