Remember Quake - it was the partner cereal to Quisp? Quisp's mascot was the little alien with the helicopter head, and Quake's was the he-man coal miner with the miner's helmet. They had a rivalry going on in their commercials, Quisp v. Quake. When I was 6 or 7 (this would have been about 1966) you could send in box tops and 99 cents and get a battery operated Quisp hat (with the helicopter) or a Quake coal miner's helmet. I had the Quake helmet. I wish I still had it - it would probably be worth money now!
Later, they wanted the kids to vote (I think it coincided with the 1968 Presidential election) as to who they liked best, Quisp or Quake, and Quisp was chosen. Quake was then discontinued.
Ever notice how you don't see the animated commercials for the "kid cereals" anymore? "Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids", "They're always after me Lucky Charms", "Follow my nose, it always knows" (Toucan Sam for Fruit Loops), Sugar Bear for Sugar Crisp, even Fred and Barney for Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles.
Anybody else old enough to remember the Crispy Critters "stampede"?
I was raised on a cereal called Team that my grandma would sprinkle chocolate protein powder on. I loved how the powder turned my milk to chocolate milk. Team was comparable to Wheaties or Total.
I wasn't allowed sugary cereals as a kid and don't care for them as an adult.
Me either. My mother didn't buy them--only had shredded wheat, total, oatmeal, etc.
We had three faucet handels at our house, one for hot, one for cold, and one for sugar. Any cereal that did'nt have the required 60 % sugar content got a drenching to make it right. Wheaties, Corn Flakes, Grape Nuts, Rasin Bran, Rice Krispies, and those giant wheat biscuts were very good with the right amount of sugar. Life cereal was gross, Mikey may of liked it, but I did'nt.
I liked all the sugar cereals when I was a kid, but now the only ones I can still eat are Frosted Mini Wheats, Frosted Flakes, Captain Crunch (rarely, and prefer crunch berries). I ate many of the sugar cereals well into adulthood and would never eat them in the morning, but later at night. Most of them cut back on the sugar and did not taste good to me anymore.
Alpha bits was the only oat type cereal that when liquored up with sugar was still good to me for many years. The monster and Flintstones cereals, Cocoa Puffs, Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Honeycomb ect are disgusting to me now............something is missing ! Strangely, Lucky Charms used to be good but now too sweet from the excessive marshmellows, it had the alpha bit like oat pieces, so I would buy them once in a while after they ruined alpha bits. But then they got away from the diamonds, stars, hearts, clovers and horseshoes and added more and more shapes, eliminated the old shapes and colors, then made the marshmellows a uniform swirl of colors..........BrrrrrrraaaaaaalllllllllFFFFFFFF !!!
Quisp was my favorite sweetened cereal when I was like 4 or 5 years old and it suddenly disappeared from the shelves one day and I moved on. After that I would base my cereal selection on what kind of prize was offered in the box. Sometimes they had 45 RPM records or something amusing, if people can remember the prizes then please share. Oddly, I bought a box of Frosted Flakes about 5 years ago and it had a Hacky Sack footbag, one of the best prizes ever, both me and Scooter the cat really enjoy playing with it, still over there on the floor, lol.
My favorite hot cereal was Co Co wheats, then later I liked chocolate Malt O meal better, then many stores quit carrying it, but wall mart still has Co Co wheats so once in a blue moon I buy those. Not really a hot cereal person, but once a year or so I buy some of the old fashoned Quaker Oatmeal.

Can't rep you again, moff, but How I laughed at this post! Especially the "sugar drenching to make it right"! "Liquored up with sugar"! LMAO!!! My youngest daughter is looking over my shoulder and reading your post, and laughing. She wants to know why they don't do prizes anymore? Something she missed out on in her youth.
My brother-in-law told me a funny story about the 45 RPM records on the back of the cereal box. He and my husband were raised in a very religious household where rock and roll music was forbidden. One day, they waited until their mother was outside working in the garden, then they cut the record off the back of the box, snuck it onto the phonograph, and rocked out to the "Archies". Those bad kids.
