It was so matter-of-fact in the book that surely somebody does/did this. Somewhere someone is reading this thread, thinking, "That's good eating! You don't even know."
Anyway, squirrel nuts aside , I've had rabbit. It's pretty good, just kind of bony. I imagine squirrel is like that. They're not fat animals, so there's probably not a lot of meat on the bones, but enough for some good picking like with chicken wings and legs. I would have tried some, even if they are just rats with cuter outfits.
Then don't eat and beef, chicken, or pork by products such as lunch meat, processed or canned meats since fresh killed squirrel is much much cleaner.
Nahhh.....I'll eat all those things because I don't and won't ever eat any rodentia, thank you.
Make it easy on yourself and just set out rat traps somewhere and collect them the next morning....I'll be at the local buffet.
I'm surprised so many meat eaters can't get past the idea of eating a squirrel - and that there aren't more people here also saying "yum" like the OP. I didn't grow up eating squirrel but have had it several times and found nothing objectionable about the taste - unlike how I can see beef eaters not liking the 'gamey' taste of venison, for example. To me,though, it's not so good that I'd go out of my way to have it or even choose it when something I liked better was available. I'm not much of a fan of rabbit either but I like it better than squirrel. Like others have noted - to me, rabbit, squirrel and little birds just aren't tasty enough for the work. Oh also, I get that they're rodents but they're not like disease-spreading, garbage-eating city rats - they're benign, plant-eating country rodents.
I don't like to eat anything I've actually seen alive. As a kid, I always told myself that meat came from a meat factory, just like cookies came from the cookie factory. I'm a city girl, and if I had to live in the country where I saw cows, pigs and chickens everyday, I'd probably be a vegetarian. I don't want to eat anything I can look out my window and see in my backyard.
My dad made a teriyaki squirrel a couple years ago. It was eating from our bird feeder and my dad enjoys survival skills, so he cooked it up. I chose not to partake.

yeah, what makes squirrel any more gross than chicken, cow, pig, squid, snake, etc. etc. if its a dead animal, ill give it a try. squirrels are small and i picture them like cute little cornish hens. i love eating those things.
I've had it as a boy but I much prefer chicken. I suppose, if times get really bad, squirrel populations could take a hit in some parts of the country. We don't have them here. Cottontails would have to suffice.
My brothers-in-law always used to hunt squirrel. They'd skin 'em and put them in the freezer. Then my poor mother-in-law would come along and grab out meat for dinner and get a nasty surprise!!
Oh yeah... I have eaten, pickled hog jowls, gizzards smothered in gristle, possum shanks, southern-fried muskrat, goat tripe, pork brains, fried chicken feet/heads, squirrels, rabbits, dove, snakes, snails, frogs, crabs, crawdads, gator, conch and just about anything else that walks, crawls, slithers, swims or flys that I could catch.
All good for you. People used to make fun of me in the military cause of the things I had eaten as a kid growing up. When we would get deployed out and were a few days out of resupply I was eating good while they were stuck with C rations.
