I buy them from farmer's markets, from time to time. People who grow them bring their surplus in to work and give it away. Does that count?

I think you need to qualify a little.

If your talking about an established vegetable stand that I can go back to if I experience a problem with the product YES

If your talking about buying from Juan Doe on some street corner no.

I also prefer Farmers Markets from local growers for fresh fruit and veggies.

I'm thinking that this thread, upon closer examination, is just posted as a jibe directed toward the "Do you ever buy tamales off street vendors? Is it safe?" thread. I didn't see that one earlier, because it hadn't come up in my feed.

If I find them lying on the side of the road where they have fallen off trucks, I eat them, even in Mexico. I just wipe the road grit off them with my shirt tail. They are safe,

yes, I think nothing of buying produce from street venders. My biggest problem, they are usually over priced, but still really good.

I love to buy "local"....
so if that street vendor is a local one, I will be all for it.

I would definitely buy from local especially if I know their tomato is grown with care for their own family.
