Bring back this old thread because I'm in the mood for sushi, apparently even at 9:30 in the morning...
I love sushi! My all-time favorite roll is a simple yellowtail and scallion roll -- when the yellowtail is super high-quality, there's nothing finer, in my opinion. I also love a good tuna + avocado roll. Rainbow rolls are good too, because I love the variety of fish (plus avocado!) draped around the roll.
However, I also love the stereotypical American-style rolls -- I have a weakness for spicy mayo (in moderation, I don't like it gooped everywhere) and crunchy things in my sushi as well. No shame there. One of my favorites of those type of rolls involves shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado, spicy crawfish, topped with tuna, crunchies and spicy mayo. And now I'm officially hungry.
When the husband and I go out for sushi, which is more frequently than we should, we tend to get a good mix of classic "clean" rolls, and a couple crunchy + spicy mayo rolls.
The two things I don't care for in/on my rolls are eel sauce (not due to the "eel" in its name, just don't like the taste) and cream cheese. Not for me.
The best sushi restaurant in California is probably Urasawa in Beverly Hills.
Toro, Kama Toro, Uni and Ankimo are my current faves and how I judge a sushi restaurant (even in Ankimo isn't sushi).
