I was at a doctor appointment the other day and she told me I (people in general) shouldn't drink beverages with meals as doing so causes us to eat more (too much) as food goes through the stomach faster.
She also said (one of the reasons) people in Europe are thin (is) because they tend not to drink beverages with meals.
Does this sound right to you?
PS. I did my due diligence and couldn't find a thread similar to this but it isn't an easy thread to search for using key words.
I drink with all meals and generally have a drink at hand. I want food to go through my stomach faster. Otherwise I'd eat no more than a child portion. Doctor's have many varying opinions..
No, it doesn't sound particularly sensible to me.

They are thin because they eat more real food (rather than the chemical enriched crap that Americans eat). You will usually find carbonated water or wine served with food. Sodas and beer are a rarity with a normal meal.
The best thing to do is follow the 20 minute rule. You will stop being hungry after 20 minutes has passed since you started. Take the time to cut up your food, take the time to fully chew your food and whatever you are drinking is used in small quantities to aid in the motion down your throat rather than some people who treat it as a side dish (ie - the free refill).

who am I to argue with a doctor, but I have never heard of such a thing. Visit Europe, France, Spain, Italy, you will see them all drinking wine with lunch and dinner. In fact in Spain it often comes with the set price meals. I have heard, drinking a glass of water 10 min before a meal will help fill you up, thus you will not be tempted to eat as much. Maybe that is what she was referring to and just got confused.
I drink water or soda with dinner & lunch, coffee with breakfast. Soda does fill you up and you do eat less, at least I do. I know my SI used to tell her kids to eat at least 1/4 of their dinner plates before theycould have soda or something to drink with dinner. Now that they are teenagers they pretty much eat 2 servings at dinner so to have a drink is not a problem.
I think you must have visited your doctor on "opposite day" because everything your doc told you is opposite to what I've always been told.
I've never been to Europe, myself, but from what I've heard they certainly do drink ale and wine with their meals. Sometimes even at breakfast.
And I've always heard that you should drink a glass of water before your meals because it makes you feel full faster.
