I would prefer help in the kitchen since my least favorite household chore is emptying the dishwasher. I swear I'd do every other household chore without complaint if he'd just unload the dishwasher (2-3 times a week max).
I do not let my husband do laundry due to the amount of career clothes I have that have to be gentle-washed and line-dried. He has ruined a thing or two of mine.
I cook, I clean if i'm just baking something (cakes or whatever)
If I cook a meal, I sort of expect a little help cleaning up.
I clean as go... So it's not like the counertops and sink is overflowing.
I dont think there is anything wrong with expecting a little help.
Dishes and silverware I do expect a bit of help..(no dishwasher here)
I'm not PO'd if it's not offered, but generaly I have no problems.

To give a hand in cleaning up a bit?
I don't think it's rude. I always help when I'm a guest, no matter how big or small the gathering. In fact, a few times, I've even insisted that the hostess relax while I do all of the cleanup.
