Are you saying you make your own instant hot chocolate mix using powdered milk and cocoa powder or that you add powdered milk TO commercially prepared instant hot chocolate mix? But we digress...
I've made my own with instant milk and one of the premium cocoa powders. It was some of the best quick hot chocolate I've ever had. It had some other things in it too, besides sugar obviously. In fact, I made Christmas baskets up with the mix, some nice chocolate candies, cookies, and some other things for the ladies at DH's work one year. I had totally forgotten about the hot chocolate mix, hope I kept the recipe somewhere.
If you use powdered milk; what brand/type do you find is "best"?
Costco has a brand from a farm called "Augason"
Seems to be a good buy, but one needs to buy a 14lb Pail(emergency food type).
= about .20/serving. A little too much for us, maybe a 7 lb pkg.
We are 165 miles from a store for milk so??
HW
We have powdered goat milk for emergencies. A couple of those long shelf milk too which I agree with another poster who previously stated that might be your best option

When I was a child my Mother once gave me a glass of powdered milk. I didn't know it was from a powder; apparently we had ran out of regular milk. I said something about the milk tasting funny, which is when she told me it was powdered. When I declined to drink it she told me I could give it to the cat. I put it in a bowl for him. He gave one sniff and walked off.
No, it had something not normally found in the recipes which made it so good. I'm going to have to spend some time, that I don't have right now, looking for it. Going to have to look further than the first couple of pages of results. Either that or it was in a blog that is long gone.

I'm not a milk drinker, but my husband packs powdered milk for our yearly week long canoe camping trips where we have to carry all our food long distances and have no refrigeration. I also use powdered coconut milk in baking.
