think you might want to stop taking things quite so seriously: the comment was made tongue in cheek!!!

Neither! I just like to eat! My wife hates to cook ever since we retired! So, on the average it's dining out or take-outs/ call-in orders with free delivery(yeah right! 10% hidden charge)!

The term is shortened from the French term Chef de Cuisine, meaning the Chief (or Head) of the Kitchen.

So if you are a professional cook, and particularly if you are in charge of a kitchen, or in charge of a department in a larger kitchen, then it's fair to call you a chef.

Wow - all this time I thought I was a lowly school cafeteria cook, but then I'm really a chef!!!! I cook professionally for other people - I feed 500 kids a day.

I'm a cook, but I'm also a bus boy and a dish washer.

A line cook is also called a Chef de Partie.

Just like playing paintball doesn't entitle you to the term "General", cooking does not entitle you to the term "Chef".
"Chef" is a job description, not an evaluation of training or experience or ability or quality. It has to do with one's working responsibility in a professional kitchen.

Well, my "working responsibility" is cooking for and serving the hungry school kids every day...and doing it with a smile.

By your definition a line cook at Outback deserves the same title as Hubert Keller. That is just plain stupid.

In the traditional nomenclature, each position in kitchen has a name. The name for the position is like a military rank. It designates one's rank, and line of command. It has nothing to do with quality or experience. There are good generals, and bad. There are good chefs, and bad.

A line cook at Outback is a Chef de Partie, one of the lowest ranks. Hubert Keller is a Chef de Cuisine, the highest rank. In addition, Hubert Keller is also a highly celebrated and honored chef, the equivalent of a General with many medals.

I used to be a reservationist, but now I would consider myself a cook. One who makes up my own recipes. I have difficulty following recipes, just like I do some rules. I like to experiment and switch different spices. Unfortunately, most things never taste the same, but it keeps things interesting.
